THE JOURNEY BEGINS HERE!

To Text or not to Text?

It is now illegal in California to text while driving. The Governator signed the law to ban texting while driving yesterday. It is illegal to READ or SEND texts while driving in California. There will be a $20 fine imposed for the first offense and a $50 fine imposed for each offense thereafter. This law will go in effect next year.

I wonder if this applies to Metrolink engineers?

Cute as a Button!

Here is the most recent pic of California. Can you say adorable? Tennesssee says that California "vocalizes new concepts by using words he already knows in a way that suggests he is saying a new concept. Most kids his age have to learn new words for new concepts."

When Pigs Fly?

This phrase is usually used to accentuate the unlikelihood of the occurrence of a certain event. For instance, if someone told you that you would some day eat a pig/ham/bacon/pork that also had the ability to lay eggs so you could get your breakfast from one source, you would say, "HA! When pigs fly. That will never happen." Guess again.

The FDA just announced that they are taking steps towards allowing genetically modified animals to be sold for human consumption. Genetic modification is different from animal cloning,(which the FDA has already approved for human consumption)in that it involves the injection and manipulation of genetic material from other sources. These other sources could include animals from other species, plants and who knows what else. The tragic part of this story is that the FDA won't require for these dinner table animals to be labeled! So, you'll never know what you are eating(I will because I am a vegetarian and I buy GMO free produce and products)or serving to your children. How do you feel about this?

Nature set things up a certain way for a reason. There must be a good reason why pigs don't mate with birds, fish don't mate with strawberries and cows don't mate with algae. Looks like the FDA has the best interests of the biotech corporations at heart instead of our health and well being.

Don't like what they're selling ya? Please write a letter to your legislature. Demand for this type of interference with nature to stop. If that doesn't work demand for these franken - animals to be labeled so at least you can be an informed consumer!

Raising California Homeschool

Homeschool started in our house yesterday, September 15th. We have been very busy! We have a blog set up to show some of the things we are learning and experiencing. Click HERE to see what we have been up to! Or go to www.RaisingCaliforniaHomeschool.blogspot.com

5 Signs That Your Toddler is Ready to Graduate from His Crib

1. Your toddler doesn't fit in his crib comfortably anymore.

2. Your toddler can easily climb in and out of his crib with the rails up.

3. Your toddler is potty trained and needs to get up at night to use the bathroom.

4. Your toddler has requested to sleep in a big kid bed.

5. You leave the room for 45 seconds (after putting your toddler in his crib) and come back to find your toddler perched on top of the corner of his crib, smiling and happily clapping to Mozart (as shown below).

More Conversations Overheard from a Homeschool Classroom (well it was really the Kitchen)

California (age 3): See my galaxy? I draw a galaxy.
Tennessee (age 9): That's a great galaxy!

California (age 3): I'm going to draw a BIG galaxy. See?
California (age 3): ...and ANOTHER BIG galaxy (as he stands on the ledge of his easel to reach the highest point of the chalkboard).

Tennessee (age 9): I'm going to draw a wormhole.
California (age 3): Ok, draw a wormhole.

California (age 3): I draw a black hole! See the black hole? You draw a black hole. Ok?

An Open Letter to Whole Foods Market

This letter was sent to Whole Foods Market Global Headquarters via email on Sunday, September 7, 2008.

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing you today to inform you that the FDA has recently released the results of an investigation into the presence of lead in women's and children's vitamins sold in stores across the United States. Of the 324 brands of vitaminns tested, 320 were found to contain lead. Although the FDA states that the levels of lead found are considered safe, I respectfully disagree. There is never a safe level of lead to give your child or to ingest while pregnant. Research shows that chronic lead exposure is silent but VERY dangerous - especially for toddlers, children and pregnant women.

It seems as though the FDA and Congress are not taking this issue seriously. I am also terribly disappointed that the vitamins I have been giving my children on a daily basis and the prenatal vitamins that I took while pregnant with my children were faithfully bought at Whole Foods(Yummi Bears and SuperNutrition Prenatal Vitamins). Therefore, I am asking you today to take matters into your own hands and develop lead free vitamins for your customers so that we can once again trust that what we buy at Whole Foods won't harm us or our children.

This email will also be posted as an open letter at www.RaisingCalifornia.blogspot.com. My readers and I will be waiting for a response. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Signed,
A disappointed but hopeful mother of two and Whole Foods customer for 9 years.
