Summer Isn't Over Yet
Summer isn't over yet! There are still SO MANY days left until Autumn Equinox, when summer is officially over and Fall officially begins. This year Autumn Equinox is on September 22, that means that we have 57 days left. That's nearly two whole months! Here are some things that we have done in Southern California this summer that might be of interest to those of you who want to live it up for 57 more days!
Santa Monica Pier

Will Rogers State Beach, Los Angeles
Temescal Canyon, Pacific Palisades
Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica
Newport Bay, Newport Beach
San Diego Zoo
Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego
Las Flores Creek Park, Malibu
Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles
Gordon Biersch Brewery, Burbank
So ignore all of the back to school propaganda and go out and live it up for 57 more days! That is what we are going to do.
Recycling Made Easy
Look what we found at Las Flores Creek Park in Malibu! With this receptacle, no one has an excuse not to recycle! We LOVE it!
Green Earth Award

We are proud to announce that we have been given the "Green Earth Award" by ECO MAMA! The "Green Earth Award" was given to us for promoting recycling and offering "green tips" to our readers. This award orginiated with GREEN EARTH JOURNEY. Thank you ECO MAMA for the noticing our efforts to make the Earth greener and healthier!
We will pass this award on to other blogs that promote green living!
Total Solar Eclipse 2009

As I type this post, the total solar eclipse is turning the sky dark in Asia. We aren't able to see the eclipse here in the United States. It is said to be the longest total solar eclipse this entire century, lasting 6 minutes and 39 seconds. Please see the newsfeed to right for images of the solar eclipse or click HERE to view a slideshow. Enjoy.

Our Edible Garden
By growing an edible garden, Tennessee and California are learning how to be sustainable in a consumer-based society. My hope is to one day have a garden large enough that will yield fruits and vegetables to share with the poor and disadvantaged. Right now, we only have enough to share with the birds and squirrels...they love us for it though.
Tomatoes (picked off the vine this morning by California)
Grapes (Cabernet)
Blueberries (pic taken in the Spring...notice the hummingbird)
Everything in our garden is 100% organic. Edible gardens lower the carbon footprint of food and provides an interconnectedness within the community by uniting family, friends and neighbors around a common cause. Be a part of a common cause! Grow an edible garden in your yard, on your deck/patio/balcony.
El Nino is Baaaack

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), El Nino is back and ready to change things up a bit across the United States. Although El Ninos are usually associated with chaotic weather patterns, the truth is that there are pros and cons to El Ninos.
PROS
Much needed rain is brought to arid regions of the Southwest which is has been going through a drought for years. This drought has caused a water shortage across the Southwest and Southern California.
The likelihood of hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean decreases, which means that the United States will most likely experience a "light" hurricane season.
More rain in Southern California this Winter, which means I will finally have a reason to buy super cute raincoats, boots and umbrellas for the kids...and they will have puddles to jump in! I have my eye on this raincoat for California (see below).
CONS
Southern and Central California may have more fierce storms during the Winter months, bringing high winds and heavy rain.
Flooding in the Midwest portion of the United States
More tornados throughout the Southern United States and Southern portions of the Midwest.
